Vladamir Propp's character types

  1. The villan—struggles against the hero
  2. The donor—prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object
  3. The (magical) helper—helps the hero in the quest
  4. The princess and her father—gives the task to the hero, identifies the false hero, marries the hero, often sought for during the narrative. Propp noted that functionally, the princess and the father can not be clearly distinguished
  5. The dispatcher—character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.
  6. The hero or victim/seeker hero—reacts to the donor, weds the princess
  7. False hero —takes credit for the hero’s actions or tries to marry the princess.
These character types usually conform to the classic Hollywood narrative, it would seem that these roles would work best in a fantasy/ SIFI film. However independent films can be traced back to these character types E.g Skyfall:

James Bond- hero
Q- donor
Kincade- the helper
Eve Moneypenny- the princess
M- dispatcher

Some indie films will try to subvert these to try and add realism to its narrative.

Children of men walking with the baby:
Themes,style and representation of gender

1.theo is a protective farther figure, mother is seen as a sacred figure
2. Dystopia, war
3. Tracking shot, POV

Is likely to be an independent film because the ending is open and challenges us to think. This doesn't conform to the classic Hollywood narrative.

This film represents masculinity as being the main power in the film. Due to women not being able to give birth they're redundant of all power in government and in society

In V for Vendetta war is seen as a tool of peace and enables the audience to take a side, where Children of Men uses war as a backdrop to a more important point in the story, war is shown as an object of destruction and is not shown in the way a Hollywood film would; where good triumphs over evil. The difference between VFV and COM is that VFV is a hollywood film.

Comparative Essay Children Of Men and V For Vendetta

Both films are set in dystopian future where society is run by a corrupt government. However Both films mainly focus on different aspects of a totalitarian state, for instance Children of men looks at infertility within women and its effects on society where as V for Vendetta looks at a corrupt government who abuses power and how no one has enough courage to stand up to it.

One similarity that both films share is a dystopian future set in London under control by a fascist government with both governments intentions of making Britain a 'pure' country. Both films actively speak against foreigners living in Britain, It also goes against homosexuals and religions that aren't seen as white religions such as Hinduism and Muslims. This is a well known aspect of Fascism and has been used during Hitler's rule of Germany. However how both governments got into power is different. Extremist political parties are voted in in times of crisis this is no different in these films but in COM the crisis is a unexplained natural problem where as VFV is a biological war created by the government on its own people to create chaos.

Another similarity these two films share is the theme of revolution, both films use the means of a violent uprising/ revolution to achieve freedom. In VFV the people of London are inspired to revolt because of Vs actions, it could be seen as a peaceful protest as they move to the House of Parliament without causing no harm, but with parliament being blown up it is seen as a violent protest. They do this for freedom from government and the fascist regime. This is similar to COM where the revolution of the ghetto is unquestionably a violent uprising. The reason for the war within the ghetto is also for freedom but for immigrants or 'undesirables'.

Another similarity between the two films is the idea of conspiracy theories, they are used by the government in both films to strengthen popularity, to create cahos to simply restoring order to show strength and it could be said that they did it for population control. In VFV the government created a chemical and planted it in water systems in 3 areas to create panic and chaos and then cure the problem to simply gain popularity. The government blame terrorists for the attack so it maximises popularity. This is not to different in COM where the government blame attacks on the public on 'terrorist groups' who are actually 'freedom fighters' who do not use violence anymore. This is used by the government to maintain faith in its regime. These events are also not to similar to reality with conspiracy theories focused on 9/11, where the government causes a catastrophe to use as a reason for actions that suit the government.

A difference between the films is the theme of infertility in COM. This theme is the main focus and drive point for all the characterss especially the protagonist ( Theo ). The cause of the problem within women is unexplained so it is impossible to identify it with any other themes within either films. Where as the main driving point for the protagonist in VFV ( V ) is revenge, he shares this anger with the society within london in the film to spur an uprising.

Overall I belive the films Children Of Men and V For Vendetta are very similar in the themes they show or use. The only difference between the films is the driving point for the protagonist.

Parental analysis and imagery in revolution scene

Parental analysis

V to evey is a mum as he cares for her by doing maternal things such as cooking.

Valerie is a mum to every as she gives her caring words.

Suttler is a farther to creedy as he is his boss. Creedy kills Sutler to gain power. Sutler is a Morden hurler --- fürher farther.

Dietrick to evey farther but seen as femine when we find out his gay

Evey is a mother for the people as she births them by letting the train go.

----
Revolution scene.
Guns- phalic holds power. Kills people
Roses- femine shows vs femine traits
Lever- phalic holds a lot of power. Blows up parliament
When the soldiers surrender- phalic they lower their guns so they lose power
Parliament- orgasm

Evey and Vs gender analysis

V female characteristics: hair, apron, dancing likes art.... Gender is questionable?
V makes society transition into a more masculine role as they are no longer scared of the government, as they first ran to the government for help when the virus spreads (feminine). Vs rebirth is when he is  hyper masculise as he develops super speed and strength ( all male trait ).

Every: vulnerable female nearly raped. Because of her parents being kidnapped she is looking for a masculine character to protect her ( shows how vulnerability ). Her role of a vulnerable female starts to develop to a more masculine role when v starts cooking for her. Vs mock prison camp is when she properly progresses from a feminine character, hair is shaved ( doesn't look like the damsel in distress ) she also no longer fears pain or death (main trait ). Her scene in the rain or her rebirth is the pinnacle moment of her transition. The God is in the rain scene is compared to Vs rebirth  as they both consume power as they both turn into masculine characters.

How does V For Vendetta represent typical gender roles to communicate messages?

In the film V for Vendetta the roles of gender most specifically mother and farther is used to dive deeper into the messages of the film and the roles of the main characters, however the film does not portray the main characters as typical gender parts. Because this film is a hollywood movie we would expect the conventional damsel in distress being saved by the built hero, however because this film does not conform to the hollywood narrative it distorts our understanding of the roles and powers held by the characters. The film uses many phallic, yonic and orgasmic imagery. The film also uses hyper masculinity to convey the roles of the characters.

A way the film portrays gender is in the scene God is in the rain 'birthing' scene. This scene compares Eveys rebirthing to Vs, the scene represents how both characters are developing more masculine traits such as Evey no longer fears death or pain and V develops a sense of hyper masculinity and vengeance, all traits that are usually portrayed in men in typical hollywood films. As seen in this scene.

This scene is the pinnacle moment in the transition of her gender ( metaphorically ) .This scene uses phallic, yonic and orgasmic imagery to show gender in this scene. The rain that lands on Eveys face is phallic as the rain is the symbol of her freedom as it enters her which then rebirths her. This is compared to when V is reborn but is seen through yonic imagery as he rises out the fire which then develops his hyper masculinity, this is suppose to tell us that V is now a much more powerful character as he develops more masculine traits such strength and speed. Both scenes use orgasmic imagery such as fire and lightning to represent rebirth as we usually link birth to an explosion of life. This is showing that the role of the male is to not fear and and be free and to act with vengeance against his oppressors.

In the parliament and people revolutions scene, no gender is truly represented as everyone is wearing a mask to protect their identity thus making them gender neutral. However Evey may be seen as a mother to society as she frees them from the clutches of democracy by letting the train go. Although we have witnessed her rebirth as a more masculine character we can still see traits of being a more stronger feminine character as she is showing traits of being a mum.
In this scene we see Evey hold the lever that controls the train, this lever represents a phallic object, it also holds a controllable amount of power that will lead to destruction ( mostly like the power a man can with hold ). We also see soldiers pointing guns at the oncoming crowd the guns are a phallic object, an object of power. However the soldiers are given orders to put down their guns which essentially de maculates them. Another phallic object that we can see in this video is Big Ben being demolished which yet again shows the fall of power and the de masculation of the government.

When we see Evey wake up in Vs safe house and talks to him whilst he is making breakfast it makes us question his gender. This is because he is carrying out traits that we usually identify with females for instance he is cooking, applies makeup to his mask, long hair, wearing an apron and he enjoys art ( from what we can see around the house ). Although V has the build and voice of a man its not unusual for men to accommodate such traits.
In this scene we question the norm. We usually identify a mother to being a nurturer and a farther as being a procreator, but here we see V nurture Evey, as a mother would. V is nurturing Evey whist creating a more fearless and free individual like a farther, this makes us ask is it always a mother who nurtures?

In Dietrichs secret room we are met with both characters portraying their gender, however we are told that Dietrich is actually homosexual but he does not display the stereotyped female characteristics that the usual Hollywood film creates.
From the beginning of the film we knew that Evey was going to try and seduce Dietrich. We don't know if she was genuinely attracted to him or prostituting herself. If she was genuinely trying to seduce him because of her attraction to him it could be because of the Oedipal complex ( where one is attracted to the qualities of their parents that are within someone else ). This would mean that Evey was attracted to Dietrich because he reminds her of her farther and that she wants needs a farther figure in her life.

Finally in the opening scene we see Evey getting dressed. As we can see that she is clearly trying to impress someone ( her boss ) she dresses up in attractive clothing which shows her femininity. Because we haven't seen to much of the film yet we can only assume that she is a vulnerable women who aims to impress others. We see her also turn off the TV this can show that she doesn't care about the issues that revolve around her life, which is the message of the film. This also shows her femininity as its usually the man who takes care of the problem and solves it. This scene also shows V getting ready we could infer that he is a feminine character as he has makeup on his mask, he is getting ready in front of a mirror and he is wearing a wig with long hair.

This scene supports the idea of 'men act then women appear' as Evey is getting ready to impress her boss, this could be that she is enticed by his power and wants a share or because she wants a promotion or to keep her job. This scene uses juxtaposition to support that V to is a feminine character as he is doing almost the replica of what Eveys doing.

Overall the film does not use typical gender roles to communicate its messages as both characters constantly move from one side to the other on the spectrum of feminine and masculine.

How does V For Vendetta get across its message and beliefs through its themes?

The film V for Vendetta is a dystopian film, set in the not so distant future where a fascist government rules over society. the film conveys its themes throughout the film in different scenes. the film mostly portrays the government as the key link to all the themes such as oppression, religion, revolution, vengeance and totalitarian/government. the film mostly uses these themes to play on our minds to wether we are going to take a stand against our own government and not allow such things to happen to us or our future generations, as the overall belief and message of the film is "People should not fear their governments it is the government that should fear their people".

One of the themes for V For Vendetta is religion, this theme is shown in the scene between Evey and the Bishop. This theme is constructed in this scene by mocking and playing on the stereotypes of actual religious figures being sexually involved with children. This is shown through the costume of Evey and the comments made by the bishop. we take from this that we must question why top religious figures are regarded so high in society and why they have a place in governments.

Oppression is also a theme in the film. evidence of this is in the scene with Evey being tortured and with Detricks room of stolen and illegal objects, such as art and homosexual pictures. this shows us that society is being oppressed by the government, however we know that V is Eveys torturer, which shows that V is not a noble protagonist and can still be seen as a terrorist. we must see that we must not allow our government to oppress us and take away our individuality.

Vengeance is one of the most important themes of the film. When we are introduced to the V we witness him blowing up the Old Bailey, the symbol of justice. This makes us our question Vs role in the film and weather he is rebelling for the right causes  e.t.c freedom or vengeance.

Overall the most important key theme of the movie I belive is vengeance. The film only takes place because of V's drive for revenge, it also shows us that V does not conform to the typical stock character of a 'hero', this makes us think, because we usually identify the protagonist. This themes main message is a warning which makes us do what the film wants us to do, think and question are selves  would society go against democracy and its values? because of grudges or vendettas?  Or would we do what we have being doing... Nothing?

Stock characters & classic Hollywood narrative

V:
Anti hero - fights for a right cause but      is technically immoral
Lone vigilante - takes responsibility for crime, when he has no authority to do so.
Villan - he uses terrorism as his tool.

V doesn't conform to stock characters, why?
For us to realise their is no stock characters in real life. Essentially to make us think.

Classic Hollywood negative
•Cause & destruction
•Character driven| psychological motivation
•3 act structure ( E- equilibrium. D- disruption. R- resolution )
• positive end| closure
• believable ' realism '

Analysis grid

1.5.1 key themes - exam prep

Themes: what are the characters doing and why are they doing.

Dystopia: a distorted vision of the near future, of a fallen government, which effects society. ------ this is a warning to us about our government and its systems

Totalitarianism: a police run state which dictates all aspects of society. Mostly occurs in times of need e.g economic struggle. ---- the society in VFV is run by a dictator, which is still common in society.

Revolution: protests wether they be passive or aggressive, for a cause or for freedom. ----- relates to us as we constantly taking to the streets for personal causes.  As in VFV when they blow up parliament for freedom

Conspiracy theories: a belief by an individual/ group that may be responsible for a particular event. Usually circulated on social media, claiming that the governments message or intent is untrue. ---- we relate this to 9/11. Links to VFV as we cannot trust our government.

Democracy: a system where society votes for a representative to run for them. ---- we live in democracy. The party Thant runs in VFV was voted in

Fascism: a nationalistic right wing system that want only their race to be superior.--- relates to us as we thought against fasicm in ww2. In VFV the leading party is fasict as they belive the British race is superior.

V for vendetta
It has a Fascist/Nazi dystopian future which is the films theme as it could happen to society. As the government despises homosexuals, immigrants or disabled people. It's also plays on the theme of conspiracy as the government played dirty to get into power and V is going against it.

Why all 3 genres?
Appeal to different demographics, Mostly boys. Because we follow an attractive female ( who is the hero ) V is not a conventional hero

Is it a sc-fi?
It's set in the future in a style of life we aren't familiar with. However the chances of the events in the film of happening are realistic e.g no/fallen democracy with a terrorist going against them. So I believe it's not a sc-fi because it's in the future but it's a for see able one.
It could also be a superhero because he is tested on which makes him essentially a mutant. So it has an element of sc-fi.

Why is it a thriller?
It has an ongoing investigation on V where we find out his shady past which makes it the other aspect of a thriller 'mystery' this also leads us too seeing other sides of the story, the detective.

Is it an action?
Yes because of the faced paced knife scenes which are the coriagraphed.
But the film does not have the conventional criteria of one e.g no up right protagonist (hero). Everyone is essentially a antagonist but we follow those of represent the good idea.

Limitless scene analysis

Bradley coopers character is always in the centre of the frame showing that he is dominant, we can also see that he looks much smarter than what he looked like before he took the drug.
The lighting has also changed to a much brighter shade to reflect that he is more aware of his surroundings and that he has a more positive attitude.
The character is now in a more controlled environment, his apartment, which he cleans, this represents that he is finally moving forward and progressing from his boring mundane life.
We can see that Bradley's performance has changed as he is more upright and alert. His makeup and hair have not changed due to the fact that the scenes are close together in sequence.

Children Of Men Analysis

Throughout the film we always see the film through Theos  ( Clive Owen ) point of view as we never have a scene where he isn't present. The film is unique due to the length of its long takes, for instance during the siege of the ghetto we follow Theo for over six minutes. this film is also intended to look like a shaky camera style ( Where the camera is never kept steady as its held by a camera man or is suppose to look this way ). this film also features very dark and gloomy colours to show that there is no hope and that society is falling to cope with its current situation. we never see what the world is like outside London as we are to believe that London is one of the only thriving countries left. 136

Theo meets his ex wife Julian ( Julianne Moore ) for the first time in twenty years, they both are both still grieving about the death of their baby boy, this is what spurs Theo to help V and Evey to get to the coast for help. Theo is the protagonist who uses drink for comfort when faced with a dilemma or problem. He is humbled by V's story and try's his all to help her. Evey who is the mentor who help V and Theo make vital decisions and wants the best for both of them, she comforts her self with spiritual rituals after she faces a dilemma or when she is in one. Theo and Evey at first don't see eye to eye but when their chances become slimmer they work together to create a best possible outcome for V. They are all motivated by peace as they want society to come together.

At the start of the film we instantly hear how society has fallen due to women no longer being able to give birth for unexplained reasons, this creates a state of dystopia and despair. due to infertility the government has changed and Britain has become a totalitarian state, which is similar to fascism as Britain is controlled by fear and propaganda. Survival is also a key theme in the film as humanity is slowly becoming extinct and groups of terrorists, as branded by the government, are trying their best to create equality for immigrants to try and save society.

the film is trying to get us to realise that we cannot fall as society, it slightly touches at the power of religion however every time someone new sees the baby they say Jesus Christ this is trying to show us the magnitude of how powerful and important the birth of the child is. Theo slowly becomes more humble and learns that he himself has the power to change things, which is also another message from the film. the film is warning us that if society falls then so will humanity, and that it is vital that we work together
